Scrap preheating process for discontinuous steelmaking proceses, using waste gas from the refining process for preheating steel scrap, whereby waste gases from a steel melting unit, e.g, a converter (1), are collected and partially burned in a combustion chamber (11) and passed to the lowest section of the scrap preheater (4), while a combustion medium is simultaneously blown into the preheater (4) and combustion is maintained. Complete combustion of the waste gas takes place in the upper section of the preheater prior to exhausting same. A fuel medium is injected and burned in the combustion chamber (11) outwith the periods of converter operation and scrap charging and the hot gases are passed through the scrap. USE/ADVANTAGE - For discontinuous steelmaking processes, with uniform continuous preheating of scrap, optium utilisation of process waste gas and favourable overall energy efficiency.
