Sixteen processor modules (2) are identical and can be interchanged. Each processor has four internal connections that allows couplings (3) to be made with four identical and interchangeable communication units (4). The internal connection structure between processors and communication units provides a fault tolerant mode of operation such that operation may continue. The communication units also provide a fault tolerant output using a total of eight lines. A three dimensional communication structure can be formed by using the function units (1).
