At the transmit side the differential signal (L-R) is changed, while the reception side has a level control in the differential signal. In the stereo transmitter (7), the lower (3) and the upper sidebands (4) of the differential signal are complementarily compressed and decompressed. The (di)compressed sidebands are used to form a stereo multiplex signal (MPx). In the other receiver (19) the signals (L-R) and (L+R) are recovered by a product detector (20). The recovered differential signals (L-R) and (L+R) are recovered by a product detector (2). The recovered differential signal (L-R) is used as a comparison level for the reception side decompression of the sideband, which has been filtered and demodulated in the receiver side prior to decomposition by a demodulator (24). USE/ADVANTAGE - Stereo broadcasting system, with better left-right cross-talk suppression.
