Aromatic polyethers of formula (I) are claimed; R1-R7 = Hal (pref. F, Cl or Br), H, 1-4C alkyl (pref. Me or Et), 6-12C aryl (pref. Ph or biphenyl) or 7-12C aralkyl (pref. methyl- or ethyl-phenyl); A = SO2, CO, SO or a gp. of formula (II), pref. CO or SO2; B = direct bond, CO, O, S, SO2 or a gp. of formula -CR8R9- or (III) (with R8, R9 = Hal, H, 1-4C alkyl or 5-12C cycloalkyl, opt. with 1 or more alkyl substits., e.g, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, methylcyclopentyl or methylcyclohexyl; p = 4-7; R10, R11 = H or 1-6C alkyl, pref. H or Me (can be different for each Z, but with both = alkyl on at least one Z, Z = carbon)); n = 0, 1,2,3 or 4; m = 0, 1,2 or 3; y, x = 1-50. Prodn. of (I), by reaction of dihalides of formula Hal-Ar-A-Ar-Hal with (IV) bis-phenols of formula HO-Ar-(B-Ar)m-OH in the presence of 1-1.5 equivs. basic catalyst (w.r.t bisphenol) and dipolar aprotic solvents of formula (II) and/or R13-Q-R14 (III), to give an OH-terminated polyether of formula HO-Ar-(B-Ar)m-(O-Ar-A- Ar-O-Ar-(B-Ar)m)y-OH, followed by reaction with a bifunctional cpd.of formula D-Ar-OOC-Ar-COO-Ar-D; Ar = variously substd. phenylene, as in (I); R12-R14 = 1-20C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl or 6-20C aryl; Q = SO or SO2; s = 3, 4 or 5; D = COCl, COOH, COOMe, COOEt, COOPr or COOBu. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of moulded prods. The invention provides high-mol. wt. modified aromatic polyethers with high Tg and high heat distortion temp.
