Modified polyesters (I) are claimed, contg. units of formula (IIA)-(IIC), with mol. ratio (IIA+IIB):(IIB)=(0.8:1)-(1.2:1) and mol. ratio (IIA):(IIC)=((0.1:1)-(1:0.1); Where B = direct bond, CO, O, S, SO2, CR6R7 or a gp. of formula (i) (with R6, R7 = H, Hal, 1-4C alkyl or 5-12C cycloalkyl (opt. with 1 or more alkyl substits. such as cyclo-pentyl or -hexyl or methylcyclo-pentyl or -hexyl); Z = carbon; p = 4-7; R8, R9 = H or 1-6C alkyl (same or different for each Z, but both = alkyl on at least one Z); R1 = H, Hal, 1-6C alkyl or alkenyl, or 6-14C aryl; R2-R5 = H, Hal, 1-6C alkyl, 6-12C aryl or 7-12C aralkyl; n = 0 or 1-4; m = 0 or 1-3; x = 1-200. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by reaction of OH-terminated polyethers (III) corresp. to unit (IIA) with bifunctional cpds. (IV) (corresp. to unit (IIB), with functional gps. = COCl, COOH, COOMe, COOEt, COOPr or COOBu) and (V) (corresp. to unit (IIC), with functional gps. = OH or OCOMe). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of moulded prods. (claimed). The invention provides liq. crystal (LC) polyesters modified with opt. substd. poly(oxy-1,4-phenylene) segments; modification with non-LC polymer segments has a beneficial effect on mechanical properties, anisotropy and crystallisation behaviour; the prods. have good mechanical and thermal properties and are useful, e.g. for the prodn. of electrical appliances, parts for automobiles and aircraft, sports equipment etc.
