The bath (1) comprises a contaier (2) for molten solder (3) with a bottom (4) and bounding wall(s) (5) forming a chamber (6) for reception of solder. The container has a heating device (7). The free surface (10) of solder (3) is covered against the free atmos. by a protective gas chamber (9) (14) and supply aperture(s) (13) for a protective gas. The container for molten lead pref. has an open top, and cover against the free atmos. is provided by a bell structure having work and supply openings. The free bottom edge of the structure is immersed into molten lead (3), or it is floating on its surface. The free surface of solder may be larger than the outside of the bell bottom. The bell structure has the shape of a cone or that of a frustum of cone, with the gas supply opening central. The material of the bell structure is a metal or a ceramic. Nitrogen enriched with a reducing agent e.g. formic acid, is used as a protective gas. The work opening has a lid.
