A traffic light system has a signal switchgear box in which the different colour light bulbs are located. The connection between the light bulb output and the signal reflectors, mounted some distance away, is provided by fibre optic conductors. The conductors can be in the form of an acrylic glass. The switchgear housing is mounted in a readily accessible position enabling servicing to be carried out with minimum effort. Back up light bulbs may also be included.
