The bright light from a lamp (18) is concentrated by a concave reflector (14) and a plane mirror (22) into the entry pupil (12A) of an optical coupler (12) incorporating a segmented rod (24) of quartz or suitably transparent plastics. The segments (26) extend throughout the length of the rod and are held together by a hollow sleeve (28) so that their exit faces abut against the ends of optical fibres (16) for distribution of the light to different places requiring illumination. USE/ADVANTAGE - In e.g. motor vehicle, display and domestic lighting installations. Conventional one-piece cylindrical coupling element can be used without elongation in axial direction.
