Contactless wheel speed sensors (16-19) associated with the driven wheels (12,13) and undriven wheels (14,15) are wired to a wheel slip detector (20) feeding an excess torque determn. unit (21) responsive to indications of gear ratio (22) and engine output torque (23). A torque redn. unit (24) operates simultaneously on the fuel injection control (3) and the ignition timing unit (4) which retards the spark by a chosen amt. while injection is suspended for a given number of cylinders and power strokes. The ignition angle is then restored progressively to its original value. ADVANTAGE - More comfortable traction control is achieved with smooth adjustment to new value of engine output torque.
