The system has an adjustable cam phaser (34) introducing a cam phase angle between an intake cam lobe (22) and a crankshaft (40). An engine control module (12) communicates with the cam phaser to introduce the cam phase angle when a spark-ignition direct-injection engine (10) is started. The cam phase angle is selected such that the intake cam lobe opens an intake valve (18) during a portion of a compression stroke of a cylinder (14) associated with the intake cam lobe. A mechanical fuel pump (30) is driven by a camshaft (26). A fuel injector (62) injects directly fuel into the cylinder. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an engine.
