Each suspension unit is fitted with a damper with variable damping characteristics controlled by an actuator either in steps or continuously. Each damper has a motion sensor to determine the acceleration of the damper in either direction, with the sensor mounted to monitor the sprung mass movement. The rate at which the characteristics are altered w.r.t. vehicle dynamics, with a slow rate of change for low accelerations. The CPU controlling system has inputs from all the sensors including vehicle speed and steering settings. To counter roll and pitch certain dampers are controlled with asymmetric damping characteristics. The CPU provides the drive signals for the actuators. ADVANTAGE - Separate control for each damper, improved comfort and stability.
