The alphanumeric keyboard (TR) of a hand-held operating apparatus (PHG) for industrial robots is designed such that one of three alphanumeric symbols can respectively be specifically operated by using triangular keys (T). A key-specific function (MODF) is then initiated after changing over the keyboard by operating a key (T) irrespective of which keyboard contact of the three associated contacts (KV, KG, KB) is operated.
