Process for splitting a log in which the log (B) is held by jaws at its two ends having the axis of its heart, constituting its longitudinal axis of gravity, in a horizontal position, and is split in four, eight or twelve quarters under the action of two opposite pairs of splitting tools (10, 13) subjected to the thrust of cylinders (12, 15), a pair of tools (10) for the initial operation splitting into four being disposed substantially in a vertical plane and acting on one end of the log and the other pair (13) being disposed substantially in a horizontal plane and acting on the other end of this log, the splitting in eight or twelve quarters being made with a chosen inclination of the plane of these pairs of tools, which are always set perpendicular to one another.
