PURPOSE:To obtain a preventing and therapeutic agent for protecting the kidney from damage extraneously caused by exogenous foreign materials, i.e., in vivo administration of various medicines and transfusion solutions, infection with bacteria and viruses, exposure to radiation, etc. CONSTITUTION:This preventing and therapeutic agent comprises a nonapeptide having the following amino acid sequence: pGlu-Ala-Lys-Ser-Gin-Gly-Gly-Ser-Asn or its ester or amide at the carboxyl group of aspartic acid in the C-terminal thereof, a pharmaceutical permissible salt of each compound or a combination of each compound with a metal as an active ingredient. This agent is capable of protecting the renal tissue or cell from damaging or destroying and the renal function from deteriorating.
