PURPOSE: To controllably perform downshifting of a transmission at a vehicle speed higher than a usual downshifting speed by changing a transmission control signal so as to correspond to a lower gear ratio. ;CONSTITUTION: This apparatus comprises a sensor 32 for generating a vehicle speed signal by detecting parameters indicating the vehicle speed, and a downshifting switch 45 for controllably generating a downshifting signal. An engine speed sensor 34 detects an engine speed and generates an engine speed signal in response to the engine speed. A controller 34 receives a vehicle speed signal, an engine speed signal, and a downshifting signal, and generates a transmission control signal by processing the vehicle speed signal, and generates a downshift possible value as a function of the engine speed signal. When a value responsive to the vehicle speed signal is less than the downshift possible value, the transmission control signal is modified so as to correspond to a lower gear ratio in all gear ratios except the lowest gear ratio.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
