PURPOSE:To vertically install a fixed code plate against a rotary axis by placing the fixed code plate on the end face of a motor housing, based on said end face which has been ground vertically against a rotary axis of a motor shaft, as a reference. CONSTITUTION:On a rear end part 12 of a motor housing, an annular part 16 of a C shape is formed as one body. An end face 18 of the annular part is ground so as to become vertical centering around a center axis 10 of a motor shaft 14. On the other hand, a photodetector plate 22 is aligned with a position where its photodetector and a slit 36 of a fixed code plate 20 correspond to each other and the element plate 22 is fixed to the code plate 20. Subsequently, by rotating the code plate 20, centering is executed. Next, centering of a rotary code plate 48 is executed in the same method as centering of the code plate 20. According to this method, centering can be executed by only an adjustment in the one-dimensional direction.
