Process for the preparation of 1-amino-4-hydroxyanthraquinone by treating 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone with ammonia in aqueous medium in the presence of a base and of catalytic quantities of a reducing agent, at a temperature of from 60 to 150@C and a pressure of from 1 to 30 bar.
