FULLY OPTICAL SWITCH

PURPOSE: To provide the fully optical switch which is operated with low operation power at high speed. ;CONSTITUTION: The fully optical switch which controls the intensity of signal light at an angular frequency ω₁ and using control light at an angular frequency ω₂ based on the non-linear optical effects is provided with the optical medium 101 of optical path length L equipped with the secondary non-linear effects so as to generate a sum frequency by utilizing the birefringence of the medium. When generating the sum frequency light (angular frequency ω=ω₁+ω₂) of the signal light and the control light, inside an optical medium 101, propagation constants β₁, β₂ and β₃ of the signal light, control light and this sum frequency light satisfy the relation of 0|β₃-β₂-β₁|10π/L.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
