METHOD OF AND IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR MAKINGDISCRETE AIRLAID ABSORBENT FIBROUS ARTICLESABSTRACTAn improved, continuous airlaying apparatus for making airlaidarticles such as discrete absorbent fibrous cores for catamenialnapkins and disposable diapers and the like having high structuralintegrity, and good edge definition. The articles are airlaid indiscrete cavities as they pass through a deposition zone of theapparatus, and are compacted a predetermined amount prior to theirbeing removed from their respective deposition cavities. Anexemplary mechanism for effecting the compacting comprises alugged cylinder having circumferentially spaced lugs which areconfigured and pitched to mesh in a quasi gear-like manner withthe deposition cavities.
