The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of enamines of the formula 1 CHEM wherein R is CN, CO2H, or CO2R1 wherein R1 is loweralkyl; Y is CH2 or C = O ; X is hydrogen, loweralkyl, loweralkoxy, halogen, hydroxy, nitro, NHCOR2 wherein R2 is loweralkyl, or a group of the formula NR3R4 wherein R3 and R4 are independently hydrogen or loweralkyl; and n is 0, 1, or 2, which comprises condensing an aniline of formula 2 CHEM wherein R and X are as hereinbeforedefined with a cycloalkanone or -dione 3 CHEM wherein Y and n are as hereinbeforedefined in an aqueous medium containing an acidic promoter.
