A method and apparatus for determining exactly the characteristics of a controlled system, such as the inertia, and the coefficient of viscous friction of a mechanical device in which an electric motor is incorporated. In the same controlled system, different kinds of control systems are set up in order to measure the response time. In accordance with the differences in the results of the measurement, the characteristics of the controlled system are determined.
