The invention relates to a method for dividing a pasty and compressible substance, especially sausage meat, into portions using a vane pump. In order to achieve a high level of metering accuracy in a simple fashion, the invention comprises that each conveying cell (8), which is filled with sausage meat, comes through a metering sector (12), which is arranged between the compression sector (11) and the ejection sector (17), downstream of the compression sector (11), a surplus quantity of sausage meat being pressed back out of the conveying cell containing highly compressed sausage meat into the following conveying cell, which is still connected to the inlet, the said pressing-back process being carried out by means of a compensating system-cylinder unit (13, 14) in the region of transition between the compression sector and the metering sector.
