For encoding a multisymbol data word according to a regular BCH code, the following steps are taken: first, all data symbols are presented sequentially according to decreasing order; upon such presenting the contribution of each symbol to the code words parity is determined. Next, a serial transposition is executed on the preliminary parity symbols, so that the series of parity symbols occur as a series between two respective rows of data symbols.
