A linear drive (12) is arranged in a housing (10) to move between a rest position and a release position. The drive forms, together with a base (16) containing a gas generator (20), a vehicle sensitive inertial mass which is movable into the release position by retardation-induced inertial forces. The gas generator is provided with an impact igniter, and a spring-loaded twin-armed impact lever (30) is swivel mounted on the housing. The spring (34) is a helical spring and produces a constant impact force over the whole of the stroke of the lever. ADVANTAGE - Saves costs relating to space requirements, to materials and to the installation procedure.
