New thermostable polyimides and polyamide-imides are of formula (I): Ar = p-phenylene (Phe), m-phenylene (Phe'), 4-methyl-1,3-phenylene, 2-methyl-1,4-phenylene and/or -Phe-A-Phe-; A = -ch2-, -CMe2-, -O-, -S-, -SO2-, -SO-, -CO-, -COO-, -CO-NH-, -NH-, -N(1-20 C alkyl)-, -N=N- or -SP-he-SO2-Phe-S-; X = -Phe-NH-CO-, -Phe'-NH-CO- or 1,3-dioxo-isoindolin-2,5-diyl; Z = opt. (poly)unsatd. 2-20C acyl or 7-20C aroyl, opt. substd. by halogen and some but not all Z may = H; n = 2-100; m = 0-100; if m = over 1, the (-NH-CO-X-Ar-) gp. is statistically distributed. (I) are prepd. (claimed by: a) reacting 3,3',4,4'-benzhydrol-tetracarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (II) with diamines of the formula H2N-Ar-NH2 and, if m = over 0, also with trimellitic or (iso)phthalic acid (derivs.) in an inert diluent; b) chemical or thermal cyclisation of the poly(amide)amic acid to a poly(amide)-imide of formula (I) with Z = H; and c) reaction with acid chloride or anhydrides of the formula Z-Cl or Z-O-Z in an inert diluent. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) can be made into fibres or films. (I) are extremely thermostable and are soluble and/or fusible in the cyclised form and hence can be processed easily by conventional methods.
