Alkyl- and/or alkenyl-glycosides with average degree of polymerisation of 1.0-1.2, are prepd. by acetalising fatty alcohols of formula R1OH (I), in presence of acid catalysts, with 5-6C sugars in molar ratio of (I): sugar of 6-20:1. R1 = 4-11C alkyl and/or alkenyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - Use of the alk(en)ylglycosides for prepn. of washing, rinsing and cleaning compsns. and prods. for care of the hair and the body is claimed. In general, the alk(en)ylglycosides (II) are used in prodn. of surfactants. (II) with low degree of polymerisation (DP) and high content of monoglycosides are obtd. (II) have excellent detergent properties.
