Quaternised bis-sorbitylalkylamines of formula (I) are new. Z = a sorbityl residue; R1, R2 = 1-18C alkyl or 1-18C hydroxyalkyl; R3 = 1-4C alkyl, benzyl or a polyalkylene oxide gp.; X = halide, phosphate, carboxylate, alkyl sulphate or alkyl phosphate. (I) are prepd. by quaternisation of a corresp. bis-sorbitylalkylamine (esp. of formula ZNR1Z),with an alkylation agent (esp. a methyl halide, dimethyl sulphate or dimethyl phosphate) or an alkylene oxide. Reaction is in the presence of a short chain aliphatic alcohol, at 30-100 deg.C and 1-10 bar. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful in prodn. of antistatic agents for textile surfaces. The cpds. are dispersible in cold water and biodegradable. They can be formed into concentrates of low viscosity.
