The present invention relates to a method and system for transmission of signals especially allowing a vehicle to know the distance separating it from a potential obstacle. According to the invention, the potential obstacle comprises a device 4 for transmission to a vehicle 2 of a carrier signal; a device 6 for generating periodic synchronisation pips; an electronic device 12 delivering a signal for placing a synchronisation pip on the carrier after its production by the generator device 6; and a control logic circuit 10, 11 receiving the signal for placing on the carrier and a signal in phase with the synchronisation pips to deliver a control signal to the device 4 for transmitting the carrier signal. The vehicle 2 comprises a reception device 5 linked to a processing device 12 for determining, from the arrival of the carrier signal and the instant of transmission of a synchronisation pip, the distance separating the vehicle 2 from the potential obstacle 1.
