PURPOSE:To provide the titled agent containing a 2-thiocyanothiophene derivative as an active component and effective in control of slime in paper mill, preservation of textile lubricant, cutting fluid, latex, etc., and mildew-proofing of starch paste, paint, adhesive, pulp, etc. CONSTITUTION:The titled agent contains a compound of formula (R is H, CH3, C2H5, Cl, Br, I, thiocyano, etc.) (the compound wherein R is I is novel) as an active component. Since the compound of formula exhibits excellent microbicidal and algicidal effect against microorganisms such as Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, molds, etc., as well as algae, it has high industrial value as a controlling agent for slime in paper mill, preservative for textile lubricant, latex, coating color, casein, etc., and mildew-proofing agent for starch paste, pulp, etc., when mixed with a carrier or diluent and converted to a preparation such as liquid, emulsifiable concentrate, suspension, wettable powder, etc., optionally in combination with an adjuvant.
