PURPOSE: To provide a new trifluoromethyl-substituted vinyl compound useful as a liquid crystal composition for liquid crystal flat displays, etc., exhibiting a smectic A phase and excellent in physicochemical stability, low viscosity and refractive index anisopropy. ;CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 is (substituted) 1-14C alkyl; R2 is H or halogen; R3 is H or an electron-attracting group; X and Y are each a (substituted) aromatic ring, a (substituted) nonaromatic hydrocarbon homocycle, a (substituted) nonaroamtic heterocycle, etc.; Q1 is single bond, an ether bond or an ester bond; Q2 is a single bond, an ester bond, C≡C, CH=CH, Ch2CH2 or CH2O; m and are each 1 or 2], e.g. chloro-1-trifluoromethyl-2-(4'-heptyl-4- biphenyl)-ethylene.
