Use of lactates in the preparation of reversible coating compositions which contain volatile organic solvents and have a low VOS emission, the lactate forming an azeotrope with the volatile organic solvent. The lactate is preferably an alkyl ester of L(+)-lactic acid containing 1 - 10, preferably 4 - 6 carbon atoms, most preferably n-butyl lactate. The organic solvent is preferably an aromatic solvent. The reversible coating composition is preferably a chlorinated rubber paint. Furthermore, reversible coating compositions which contain azeotropic mixtures of lactates and volatile organic solvents, and the use thereof in the coating of substrates.
