Network access device (36) and address processing unit (38) interface originating facsimile machine (10) with inbound node (40) of store and forward network (42). Network (42) provides communication between facsimile machine (10) and receiving facsimile machine (12). Network access device (36) receives from facsimile machine (10) a first telephone number address signal that normally directly accesses receiving facsimile machine (12), and generates and stores address information corresponding to the first address signal. Device (36) provides a second telephone number address signal to access address processing unit (38) via telephone network (16). Network access device (36) transmits the stored address information and connects facsimile machine (10) to telephone network (16) to transmit message data to inbound node (40). This procedure allows the originating facsimile machine (10) to employ store and forward network (42) as if transmitting message data to receiving facsimile machine (12) in a point-to-point manner.
