A hydrostatic capable camera lens and imaging device for deep underwater use

Disclosed is an underwater imaging apparatus comprising: a CCD television camera in a cylindrical housing having an optical quality viewing port at one end and a flexible diaphragm at the other end. The housing also contains a motorised focussing lens, video signal processor/transmitter, and internal component suspension devices. The housing is filled with an optically suitable liquid (fluid) which, in reaction to the movement of the diaphragm equalises and transmits pressure created by depth to all internal parts of the housing via the hydrostatic equilibrium effect of two liquids at rest and in contact (via the diaphragm) with each other. The video signal is transmitted via cable or by non-cable method to a remote receiving/controlling station. The underwater imaging apparatus is suitable for use in sub ocean depths in excess of 1 kilometre without the need for bathysphere type pressure housings with their extensive support equipment.
