The invention concerns the continuous pretreatment of cellulose-containing textile material, the pretreatment comprising (a) a precleaning stage using a bath containing the usual surfactants and other auxiliaries plus, optionally, the usual enzymes as desizing agents and having a pH of 5 to 11, and, following washing and rinsing, (b) a bleaching stage using hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous alkaline liquor containing the usual surfactants and other auxiliaries, the bath used in stage (a) also containing 1 to 10 % by wt., relative to the weight of the textile material, of (i) an aminopolycarboxylic acid, a hydroxylalkylphosphonic or aminophosphonic acid, a polycarboxylic acid, a polyhydroxycarboxylic acid or an inorganic polymetaphosphate, or a mixture thereof, as a complexing agent for multivalent metal ions or (ii) a water-soluble polymer containing 40 to 100 % by wt. of monoethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides, or a mixture thereof, the polymer having a K-value of 8 to 80, as a dispersant or (iii) a mixture of components (i) and (ii) in the ratio of 10:1 to 1:10 by weight.
