A method for obtaining granular aluminium fluoride involves feeding an aluminium-containing component and a fluor containing-component into a reaction zone at a temperature of about 90 to about 650 °C. The chemical reaction produces a reaction mass containing aluminium fluoride, said reaction mass being discharged from the reaction zone and then dehydrated to a moisture content of about 0.1 to about 2.5 %, to give powdered aluminium fluoride. The specific surface area of the powdered aluminium fluoride is then increased, the aluminium fluoride being pelletized in the presence of a binder to produce granules. Said granules are subjected to heat treatment involving heating them to a temperature from about 500 to about 550 °C at a rate precluding chemical reaction of the aluminium fluoride with the binder, the heated granules are held at the stipulated temperature for at least thirty minutes and subsequently cooled at a rate exceeding the rate of heating.
