Ribbon cassette driving in portable copiers and printers

A ribbon cartridge and drive system for use in printers, typewriters, copiers or the like in which a supply spool (64) and a take-up spool (66) are enclosed in a housing (60) with each spool (64,66) extending from the housing (60) for selective alternate engagement with a drive member connected to a brake member, both being coordinated with the movement of a printing head (25). A stripper bar (80) peels the ribbon (58) from a copy sheet downstream of printing head (25) movement. The drive system cooperates with the printing head (25) whereby a method of ribbon conservation is realized.
