A combined scanning pattern for ultrasonic imaging comprises a linear scanning pattern and one or more sector scanning patterns. The sector scanning patterns border along their borders on the linear scanning pattern in order to form a generally trapezoidal scanning pattern. The linear scanning pattern can be controlled within a desired angle theta in order to obtain high-quality imaging. For imaging at shallow depths, the sector openings can be reduced in terms of width. The linear scanning pattern can be enlarged in terms of width. The scanning pattern provides a wide (large) field of view both for shallow imaging and for deep imaging.
