The invention teaches a method for determining the permeability of soil formations, especially for base sealing of landfills and/or for covering landfills. At least one leakage-water collection device, stretching at least partly through the soil formation, and equipped with a central tube, metal sheets for collecting leakage water and leakage-water sample holders assigned to the latter, is installed in the soil formation. By means of the metal sheets for collecting leakage water, leakage water from a plurality of collection regions, arranged at various heights in the soil formation, is collected. In this case, the collected leakage water is fed to the central tube. The leakage water is gathered as leakage-water samples in the leakage-water sample holders assigned to the metal sheets for collecting leakage water. The leakage-water samples gathered in the leakage-water sample holders are analysed and the analysis values are correlated with each other while taking into account the height of the collection regions and the duration of the sampling.
