In the aim of reducing the environmental impact of landfills, it is necessary to better document the service lifetime of HDPE geomembrane (HDPE GM) when used for landfill bottom lining. In spite of previous studies carried out on the geomembrane degradation in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, there is no reliable tool to predict their service lifetime. This can be explained by the fact that most of the geomembranes durability studies do not include all the ageing mechanisms (physical/chemical, mechanical and biological) and also by the fact that they are based on empirical methods (Arrhenius methods or acceleration factor ...) that can lead to risky extrapolations. A non-empirical kinetic model that simultaneously study and quantify chemical and biological ageing is developed (Figure 1) to predict the very long term performance of HDPE geomembranes.
