Coupling device of the sliding type which comprises: an internal element (10) having a portion of the sliding contact (12); a cylindrical exterior element (16) which receives the portion of the sliding contact; and a sliding element (26) of synthetic resin which is fixed to an inner surface of the outer element. The part of the sliding contact of the inner element is supported in a sliding manner by an inner circumferential surface of the sliding element. A retaining ring is substantially annular, (22) is placed in engagement with a circumferential groove (20) formed in an inner surface of the outer element. The retaining ring abuts against an axial end of the sliding element in order to limit its axial displacement. The sliding element comprises a part of the set (52) which penetrates into the groove and performs a clearance between an inner wall of the groove and the retaining ring. A method of manufacturing such a device is also described.
