PURPOSE:To provide the improved magnetic recording tape and particularly the magnetic recording tape for VTR which execute long-term recording. CONSTITUTION:The Young's modulus in the longitudinal direction of the magnetic recording tape is =650kg/mm2 and the Young's modulus in the transverse direction thereof is the same as the Young's modulus in the longitudinal direction or larger than this modulus. The thermal shrinkage when treated for 30 minutes at 100 deg.C in the transverse direction is in a 1.0 to 3.0% range and the surface roughness Ra is =0.005mum. This magnetic recording tape consists of a base consisting of a biaxially oriented polyethylene-2, 6-naphthalate film having =0.01% oligomer deposition when treated for 5 minutes in the air kept at 160 deg.C, a thin magnetic metallix film formed on one surface of this base and a coated film consisting of an org. high polymer contg. a lubricant applied on the other surface of the base.
