PURPOSE: To provide a method for preventing the deformation of a stainless steel strip in a vertical type bright annealing furnace and suppressing the generating of rubbing flaws by contact with furnace walls. ;CONSTITUTION: The inlet side shape λ (x) of the stainless steel strip S, the average tension σi (y) applied in the height direction y of the vertical type bright annealing furnace 10 and the height direction perpendicular stress σy,ih (x, y) calculated in accordance with the measured value or estimated value T (x, y) of the temp. distribution in the height direction y and width direction x are confined within the conditions saticfy the flowing equation with respect to the arbitrary height direction position y and the arbitrary width direction position x: σy,ih (x, y)-E{T(x, y)}.λ(x)+'i(y)≥0, where E{T(x, y)}: the Young's modulus of the stainless steel strip at the temp.
