PURPOSE: To obtain a polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber, having performances of a high strength, hydrophilicity, weather and alkali resistances and excellent in dry and wet dimensional stabilities by carrying out the shrinking treatment of a hot-water resistant fiber, consisting essentially of a specific polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer and having a homogeneous cross section. ;CONSTITUTION: This method for producing a polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber is to dissolve the polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer having ≥1000 average polymerization degree in dimethyl sulfoxide, prepare a spinning solution, subsequently discharge the resultant solution through a spinning nozzle, introduce the discharged solution into a coagulation bath comprising a mixed solvent of methanol/dimethyl sulfoxide, coagulate the solution, then wet-draw the coagulated fiber, further desolvate the wet drawn fiber, dry the desolvated fiber, then dry hot-draw the fiber, afford a drawn yarn having ≥100°C temperature (T) of hot water resistance and a homogeneous cross section and further shrink by ≥2% the drawn yarn in hot water or a steam atmosphere at a temperature within the range of 85 to (T-5)°C. The obtained polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber has a long period in the equatorial direction according to the small-angle X-ray scattering.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
