a method for the determination of nitrate to nitrite conversion carried out by micro-organisms or their enzymes in a sample of biological material, the essence of which lies in thethe sample of biological material containing nitrate present or delivered to the sample or to the culture environment, incubated at either alone or in the culture environment in the presence of a m-phenylene- diaminu or its salts in a concentration of 0.01 to 10 g.l.sup. - 1.n. sample biological material and, where appropriate, the culture environment at a temperature of 1 to 70.sup.o.n.c for a period of up to 14 days.and then visually or photometrically the absorbance of a sample of biological material or cultured cultured mixture sample of biological material and and culture environment.
