The description relates to a process for making a pencil in which a lead (10) is fitted in a groove (22) of a first casing section (18) and then a second casing sections (20) with a groove (22) is applied and the two casing section (18, 20) are adhesively secured together and with the lead (10). To prevent possible manufacturing problems caused by dimensional tolerances on the lead (10) and/or the grooves (22), it is proposed to apply a layer (12) of a flexible molten adhesive to the lead (10) with outside dimensions lying within close dimensional tolerances and then to fit the lead (10) into the groove (22) in the first casing section (18) and to fasten it between the two casing sections (18, 20).
