The present invention relates to a seat for handicapped people which is to be arranged in a wheelchair. The seat comprises a frame with a bottom transverse support, a top transverse support and two side supports which extend between the transverse supports. A covering is arranged between the frame, forming a seat surface 8 between the transverse supports and the side supports. The seat surface contains a seat section 9 which extends between the transverse supports and, on either side of the seat section, a side section 13, 14 extending between the seat section and a side support. The seat section and/or the side sections are formed from a bottom layer of elastic material and a top layer of material which is at least substantially inelastic. At the seat section, the top layer is shirred in a strip pattern on top of the bottom layer. At the side sections, the top layer is shirred in a diamond shape onto the bottom layer at the transition between the backrest and the seat surface. The frame may comprise a single tub. IMAGE
