Water insol. polymer of formula P-(-(-O-R-)n-(NH-Q)p-F)m (I) is claimed. In (I) P- = polymeric matrix having structure and mol. wt. as to be insoluble in water; R- = either -CH2CH2-, or mixts. of -CH2CH2- and -CH2CH(CH3)- with, in the latter case, the molar ratio of both units to each other being of at least 3:1; n = 3-50; m = number such that the wt.% of all the -(-O-R) (NH-Q) -F hydrophilic chains results to be higher than 1 wt.%, to total of (I); Q = difunctional, either aliphatic or aromatic, 2-6 C hydrocarbon radical; p = 0 or 1; F is a chelating gp. selected from dithiocarbamate and methylthiourea when p is 1, or from thiol and isothiouronium when p is 0. Also claimed are: (i) the prepn. of the polymer; and (ii) the use of the polymer in the treatment of waste waters polluted by heavy meals esp. mercury or lead. Pref. -P- is polymeric matrix derived from chloromethylated styrene-divinylbenzene resin, or from poly(4-methyl styrene) or from poly(2,6-dimethyl-4-phenylene oxide). R is -CH2CH2-, n is 3-50 pref. 4-40. m is a number such that the content, as wt.%, of all of the hydrophilic chains -(-O-R-)n-(NH-Q)p-F results to be comprised of 10-50% of the total wt. of the polymer of formula (I).
