A biosensor essentially comprising a porous electronic matrix 1 having a high surface area, crosslinked graphite, silver foam, etc., in intimate contact with a highly hydrophilic matrix such as dextrane or agarose, on which an enzyme bioelement 2, receptor, etc., is physically or chemically immobilised. This matrix may contain a mediator system. A working potential of between -1.5 and +1.5 with respect to a reference electrode is imposed on the conducting material so as to permit the exchange of electrons between the general electroactive compounds in the analyte/bioelement/mediator interaction and the conducting material. The electrode material makes it possible to achieve high currents which are reflected in an increase in sensitivity of several orders of magnitude in comparison with the best membrane biosensors and the production of microsensors which do not require a sophisticated electrode amplification system. The electrode material, which is incorporated in suitable configurations, may be used in the field of clinical diagnostics and measurements in flow fields or systems. IMAGE
