AQUEOUS METAL COATING COMPOSITION AND PROCESS WITH IMPROVED WETTING OF OILY OR SIMILARLY SOILED SURFACES

A fluorinated carboxylate salt anionic surfactant and/or a perfluoroalkylpoly(oxyethylene) nonionic surfactant enables polymer containing aqueousliquid treating agents for metals wet both clean and oil-contaminatedsurfaces, while most other surfactants, including other fluorinatedsurfactants, fail to provide this desirable property. These excellent wettingsurfactants are usefully used together with a combination of sulfur-freeazoles, preferably benzotriazole and tolytriazole, and sulfur-containingazoles, preferably 2-mercaptobenzothiazole or mercaptobenzimidazole, toprevent discoloration, staining, or corrosion of metal surfaces being coatedwith an organic protective coating from aqueous dispersion or solution.
