The system includes use of a time varying transmission channel. Data transmission includes information which can be used at the receiver to estimate transmission channel details. A device (11) estimates whether the transmission of channel variation information is necessary in relation to the actual channel variations. Transmission quality (13) and degradation in transmission quality (14) are used in the estimate. When channel information is not required, the transmission of such information is blocked (12).
